Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
- 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
- 2 cups mashed potatoes (prepared, homemade or store-bought)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
- Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty, about 1/2 inch thick.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the hamburger patties to the skillet. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the beef broth and cream of mushroom soup. Stir well to combine, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet for added flavor.
- Add the frozen mixed vegetables to the skillet and stir to combine. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 5 minutes, letting the flavors meld together.
- Return the cooked hamburger patties to the skillet, nestling them into the sauce. Spoon some of the sauce over the patties to ensure they are well-coated.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, spread the hamburger steak and sauce mixture evenly across the bottom.
- Carefully spoon the prepared mashed potatoes over the top of the hamburger steak mixture, spreading them out evenly to cover the entire surface.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the mashed potatoes, ensuring that every bite will have a cheesy goodness.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil to prevent the cheese from burning and to keep the moisture in.
- Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes.
- After 25 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
- Once done, remove the baking dish from the oven and let it sit for about 5 minutes before serving. This will help the dish set slightly and make it easier to serve.
