Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
- Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Wash and peel the apples. Use a mix of Granny Smith for tartness and Honeycrisp for sweetness.
- Core and slice the apples into thin wedges, about 1/4-inch thick.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with lemon juice, ground cinnamon, granulated sugar, and salt. Toss until well coated.
- Let the apple mixture sit for about 10 minutes to meld flavors and release juices.
- In another mixing bowl, combine rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, and nutmeg (if using). Stir until well mixed.
- Pour in the melted butter and vanilla extract. Mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, with some larger clumps for crunch.
- Set the topping aside.
- Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter.
- Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly and including all accumulated juices.
- Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 35-40 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.
- If the topping browns too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil for the last 10-15 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for 10-15 minutes before serving.
- Scoop portions into bowls and top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
- For extra flair, sprinkle with additional cinnamon or drizzle with caramel sauce.
- Best enjoyed warm, but can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat before serving.
Notes
- For added crunch, mix in chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans into the topping.
- Consider adding dried cranberries or raisins to the apple mixture for extra flavor and color.
