Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
- Chocolate glaze (optional)
- Sprinkles (optional)
Instructions
- Start by gathering all your ingredients and ensuring your bread machine is clean and ready for use.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients: 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg, and 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Whisk them together until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, mix the wet ingredients: 1/2 cup of whole milk, 2 large eggs, 1/4 cup of melted unsalted butter, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Whisk these ingredients until they are fully blended.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir gently with a spatula or wooden spoon until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay.
- Transfer the dough into the bread machine pan. Make sure to spread it evenly across the bottom of the pan.
- Set your bread machine to the dough setting. This will typically take about 1 hour and 30 minutes, but refer to your machines manual for specific instructions. Start the machine and let it do its work.
- Once the dough cycle is complete, remove the dough from the bread machine and place it on a lightly floured surface. The dough should be soft and slightly sticky.
- Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness. Make sure to dust the surface and the rolling pin with flour to prevent sticking.
- Using a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters (one larger and one smaller), cut out donut shapes from the rolled dough. Place the cut donuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Gather any scraps of dough, re-roll, and cut out additional donuts until all the dough is used.
- Cover the donuts with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes. This will allow them to puff up slightly.
- While the donuts are rising, prepare your frying oil. In a deep skillet or heavy-bottomed pot, pour enough vegetable oil to submerge the donuts (about 2-3 inches deep). Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can use a candy thermometer to check the temperature.
- Once the oil is hot, carefully add a few donuts at a time, being cautious not to overcrowd the pan. Fry each donut for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to flip them and remove them from the oil.
- Once cooked, transfer the donuts to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Allow them to cool slightly before glazing or dusting.
- If you prefer powdered sugar, simply dust the warm donuts with powdered sugar using a sifter or a fine mesh strainer.
- For a chocolate glaze, melt 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips with 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth.
- Dip the top of each donut into the melted chocolate glaze, allowing any excess to drip off. Place the glazed donuts on a wire rack to set.
Notes
- Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature for frying to achieve a golden brown color.
- Customize your donuts with different toppings like sprinkles or flavored glazes.
