Description

Indulge in the sweet and savory delight of candied bacon, featuring thick-cut bacon coated in caramelized brown sugar and spices. Perfect for parties or a tasty snack, this easy recipe balances flavors for a delicious treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound thick-cut bacon
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Parchment paper (for baking)
  • Cooling rack (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. If using, place a cooling rack on top of the baking sheet.
  3. Lay the bacon strips in a single layer on the parchment paper or cooling rack, ensuring they do not overlap.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine brown sugar, black pepper, cayenne pepper (if using), and smoked paprika. For added flavor, mix in maple syrup and vanilla extract.
  5. Generously sprinkle the sugar mixture over the bacon strips, pressing it into the bacon. Repeat on the other side for a thick coating.
  6. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until crispy and caramelized. Flip the bacon halfway through cooking for even crispiness.
  7. Remove the bacon when golden brown and the sugar is bubbling.
  8. Transfer the bacon to a cooling rack or a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess grease. Let cool for 5-10 minutes until the sugar hardens.
  9. Once cooled, cut the bacon into bite-sized pieces if desired.
  10. Arrange on a platter and serve as is or garnish with extra black pepper or maple syrup.

Notes

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) until crispy.
  • For freezing, separate pieces with parchment paper before placing in a freezer-safe bag. Thaw in the refrigerator and reheat before serving.
  • Feel free to experiment with different spices or add nuts for a unique twist!
