Ingredients
Scale
- 4 (6-ounce) beef cube steaks
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup milk
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- 1 cup milk (for gravy)
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (for gravy)
- Salt and pepper to taste (for gravy)
Instructions
- Tenderize the cube steaks by placing them between plastic wrap and pounding to about 1/2 inch thick. Season with salt and pepper, and let sit for 15 minutes.
- In a shallow dish, mix 1 cup flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. In another bowl, whisk together eggs and 1/4 cup milk.
- Dredge each steak in the seasoned flour, dip in the egg wash, and then return to the flour for a second coating. Place on a clean plate.
- Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F. Fry the breaded steaks for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and keep warm.
- Pour out most of the oil, leaving 2-3 tablespoons. Whisk in 1/4 cup flour to create a roux, cooking for 1-2 minutes. Gradually add 1 cup milk while whisking until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
- Serve the crispy cube steaks hot, topped with gravy.
Notes
- For extra flavor, you can add sautéed onions or mushrooms to the gravy.
- Make sure the oil is hot enough before frying to ensure a crispy texture.
- This recipe can be easily doubled for larger gatherings.
