Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 large egg
- ¾ cup buttermilk
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (for crumb topping)
- ¼ cup powdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a donut pan with non-stick cooking spray or butter.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients: flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Whisk until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients: egg, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Ensure the melted butter has cooled slightly.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently fold until just combined. A few lumps are okay.
- In a medium bowl, combine brown sugar, panko breadcrumbs, and ground cinnamon. Mix until evenly coated.
- Drizzle in melted butter and mix until the crumb mixture resembles wet sand.
- Using a piping bag or zip-top bag with the corner snipped off, fill each cavity of the donut pan about ¾ full with the batter.
- Generously sprinkle the crumb topping over each filled donut cavity.
- Place the donut pan in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Remove the pan from the oven and let it cool for about 5 minutes. Invert onto a wire rack to release the donuts.
- Once cooled, dust the donuts lightly with powdered sugar.
- Serve immediately or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. For longer storage, freeze for up to a month.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, consider adding a teaspoon of almond extract to the wet ingredients.
- Feel free to experiment with different spices or toppings, such as chocolate chips or melted chocolate drizzle.
