Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 cup plain yogurt
- 3/4 cup warm water (approximately 110°F or 43°C)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (or melted butter)
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)
- Extra flour for dusting
- Butter or ghee for brushing (optional)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Whisk together until well mixed.
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the yogurt and olive oil. Mix with a spoon or your hands until the mixture starts to come together.
- Gradually add the warm water, a little at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms. You may not need all the water, or you may need a little more, depending on the humidity and the flour.
- Once the dough has come together, knead it on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle a little more flour as needed.
- Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rest in a warm place for at least 1 hour.
- While the dough is resting, prepare the garlic butter. In a small bowl, combine the minced garlic with melted butter or ghee. Set aside.
- After the dough has rested, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and shape each portion into a ball.
- On a lightly floured surface, take one ball of dough and flatten it slightly. Roll it out into an oval or circle about 1/4 inch thick.
- Preheat a cast-iron skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat.
- Once the skillet is hot, place the rolled-out naan onto the skillet. Cook for about 1-2 minutes until bubbles start to form on the surface.
- Flip the naan and cook for another 1-2 minutes on the other side until golden brown with charred spots.
- Remove the naan from the skillet and immediately brush it with the prepared garlic butter. Sprinkle with chopped cilantro if desired.
- Repeat the rolling and cooking process with the remaining dough balls.
- Once all the naan is cooked, stack them on a plate and cover with a clean kitchen towel to keep warm.
- Serve warm with your favorite Indian dishes or as a side with dips.
Notes
- For a softer naan, consider adding a bit more yogurt to the dough.
- Allowing the dough to rest longer (up to 2 hours) can enhance flavor and texture.
- Uncooked dough balls can be frozen for later use; just thaw and roll out when ready to cook.
- Feel free to experiment with different herbs and spices in the garlic butter for unique flavors.
