Description

This Hamburger Steak recipe features juicy beef patties simmered in a savory sauce, served with steamed rice and vegetables, making it a perfect choice for a comforting weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g ground beef (preferably a mix of lean and fatty)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1 cup beef broth (or water)
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (for sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (for sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (for sauce)
  • Chopped parsley (for garnish)
  • Steamed rice (for serving)
  • Steamed vegetables (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, finely chopped onion, panko breadcrumbs, milk, egg, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Use your hands to mix thoroughly.
  2. Knead the mixture gently until it becomes slightly sticky, about 2-3 minutes. Avoid overworking the meat to prevent toughness.
  3. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rest in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
  4. After resting, wet your hands with water to prevent sticking, and divide the mixture into four equal portions.
  5. Shape each portion into a patty, about 1 inch thick, making a slight indentation in the center of each patty.
  6. Place the shaped patties on a plate and set aside.
  7. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Carefully place the patties in the skillet, avoiding overcrowding.
  8. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on one side without moving them, then flip and cook for another 4-5 minutes on the other side.
  9. Once browned, add the beef broth (or water) to the skillet, covering the patties halfway. Cover with a lid and let simmer for about 10 minutes.
  10. Remove the lid and let the liquid reduce for another 5 minutes.
  11. In a small bowl, mix together the ketchup, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar until the sugar is dissolved.
  12. Once the patties are done cooking, remove them from the skillet and place them on a serving plate. Pour the sauce over the patties.
  13. Serve with a generous scoop of steamed rice alongside the hamburger steak.
  14. Optionally, add a side of steamed vegetables like broccoli, carrots, or green beans.
  15. Garnish with chopped parsley for a fresh touch.
