Mint Julep Cocktail: The Ultimate Guide to the Classic Recipe

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 1 serving 1x

Description

A classic and refreshing Mint Julep, perfect for warm weather. Made with bourbon, mint, simple syrup, and plenty of crushed ice.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 ounces bourbon (high-rye recommended)
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • 810 fresh mint leaves (plus a sprig for garnish)
  • Crushed ice
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup fresh mint leaves, packed

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Glass: Chill a pewter cup, rocks glass, or double old-fashioned glass in the freezer for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Muddle the Mint: Place mint leaves in the chilled glass. Gently muddle with simple syrup (or mint syrup) 4-5 times, being careful not to over-muddle.
  3. Add the Bourbon: Pour bourbon over the muddled mint and syrup.
  4. Pack with Crushed Ice: Fill the glass completely with crushed ice, packing it tightly.
  5. Stir and Churn: Gently stir the mixture with a long spoon, incorporating the bourbon, mint, and ice. Churn the ice to create a slushy consistency.
  6. Add More Ice: Add more crushed ice to form a dome on top of the glass.
  7. Garnish: Slap a fresh mint sprig between your hands to release its aroma and place it in the ice dome, stem down. Add a short straw if desired.
  8. Enjoy Immediately: Sip slowly and savor the flavors.

Notes

  • Bourbon Selection: High-rye bourbon is recommended, but any bourbon can be used. Wheated bourbon will result in a sweeter Julep.
  • Sweetness Adjustment: Adjust simple syrup to taste.
  • Mint Variety: Spearmint is traditional, but other varieties can be used.
  • Sparkling Julep: Top with club soda or sparkling water.
  • Fruit Julep: Add berries before muddling.
  • Non-Alcoholic Julep: Substitute bourbon with strong brewed iced tea or a non-alcoholic bourbon alternative.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • Too bitter: Over-muddling.
    • Not sweet enough: Add more simple syrup.
    • Too strong: Add club soda or sparkling water.
    • Melting too quickly: Ensure glass is chilled and use plenty of crushed ice.
  • Crushed Ice: Crucial for chilling and diluting the drink.
  • Fresh Mint: Essential for a great Mint Julep.
  • Serving Suggestions: Perfect for warm weather gatherings.
  • Personal Touch: Add a tiny pinch of sea salt to enhance the flavors.
  • Enjoy Responsibly!
