Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon instant yeast
- 3/4 cup warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (plus more for greasing)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs (such as oregano, basil, or thyme)
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
- Coarse sea salt for sprinkling
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Stir gently until the sugar is dissolved.
- Add the instant yeast to the water mixture. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Once the yeast is frothy, add the olive oil and salt to the mixture. Stir to combine.
- Gradually add the all-purpose flour, one cup at a time, mixing with a wooden spoon or spatula until a shaggy dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Form the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Transfer it back to a lightly floured surface.
- Roll the dough out into a rectangle, approximately 12×8 inches in size, about 1/2 inch thick.
- Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into strips, about 1 inch wide.
- Take each strip and gently twist it a few times to create a spiral shape. Place the twisted breadsticks onto a greased sheet pan, leaving some space between each stick for expansion.
- Cover the shaped breadsticks with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- While the breadsticks are rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a small bowl, combine the garlic powder and dried Italian herbs. If you are using Parmesan cheese, add it to the mixture as well.
- Once the breadsticks have completed their second rise, brush them lightly with olive oil.
- Sprinkle the garlic and herb mixture evenly over the breadsticks.
- Finally, sprinkle a pinch of coarse sea salt over the top of the breadsticks.
- Place the sheet pan in the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the breadsticks are golden brown and cooked through.
- Check for doneness by tapping the bottom of a breadstick; it should sound hollow.
- Once baked, remove the sheet pan from the oven and let the breadsticks cool for a few minutes on the pan.
- Serve the breadsticks warm, either on their own or with a side of marinara sauce, garlic butter, or your favorite dipping sauce.
- For an extra touch, you can brush the breadsticks with melted butter right after they come out of the oven for added richness.
Notes
- Feel free to customize the toppings by adding your favorite herbs or spices.
- For a cheesy version, increase the amount of Parmesan cheese or add mozzarella cheese to the dough.
