- 1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 hamburger buns
- Optional toppings: sliced pickles, shredded cheese, or coleslaw
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Use a wooden spoon to break it apart as it cooks. Brown for about 5-7 minutes until no longer pink.
- Drain any excess fat from the skillet to keep the filling from being too greasy.
- Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until softened.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- In a medium bowl, combine the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until well combined.
- Pour the sauce mixture over the beef and vegetable mixture in the skillet. Stir until the beef is well coated.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Slice the hamburger buns in half if they arent pre-sliced.
- Place the buns on a baking sheet, cut side up. Optionally, spread a little butter on the cut sides.
- Toast the buns in the oven for about 5-7 minutes, or until lightly toasted.
- Spoon a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe filling onto the bottom half of each toasted bun.
- Add any optional toppings like sliced pickles, shredded cheese, or coleslaw.
- Place the top half of the bun on the sandwich and press down gently.
