Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Optional toppings: sliced pickles, shredded cheese, or coleslaw

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Use a wooden spoon to break it apart as it cooks. Brown for about 5-7 minutes until no longer pink.
  2. Drain any excess fat from the skillet to keep the filling from being too greasy.
  3. Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until softened.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  6. Pour the sauce mixture over the beef and vegetable mixture in the skillet. Stir until the beef is well coated.
  7. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Slice the hamburger buns in half if they aren’t pre-sliced.
  10. Place the buns on a baking sheet, cut side up. Optionally, spread a little butter on the cut sides.
  11. Toast the buns in the oven for about 5-7 minutes, or until lightly toasted.
  12. Spoon a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe filling onto the bottom half of each toasted bun.
  13. Add any optional toppings like sliced pickles, shredded cheese, or coleslaw.
  14. Place the top half of the bun on the sandwich and press down gently.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, consider adding a dash of hot sauce or some diced jalapeños to the filling.
