  • 1 can (5 oz) tuna, drained
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup celery, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup sweet pickle relish (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 slices of bread (your choice: sourdough, whole wheat, or rye)
  • 4 slices of cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or American)
  • Butter or margarine for spreading

Instructions

  1. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, add the drained tuna. Use a fork to break it up into smaller pieces.
  2. Add the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, and lemon juice to the bowl. Mix well until the tuna is evenly coated.
  3. Incorporate the finely chopped celery and red onion into the tuna mixture. If you are using sweet pickle relish, add it at this stage as well.
  4. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste. Mix thoroughly to ensure all ingredients are well combined.
  5. Taste the tuna salad and adjust the seasoning or add more mayonnaise if you prefer a creamier texture.
  6. Choose your preferred bread. Sourdough, whole wheat, or rye are all excellent options for a tuna melt.
  7. Lay out the slices of bread on a clean surface. You will need two slices for each sandwich.
  8. Spread a thin layer of butter or margarine on one side of each slice of bread. This will help achieve a golden, crispy crust when grilling.
  9. Take one slice of bread and place it buttered side down on a clean surface.
  10. Spread a generous amount of the prepared tuna salad on top of the unbuttered side of the bread.
  11. Place a slice of cheese on top of the tuna salad. You can use one type of cheese or mix different types for added flavor.
  12. Top with another slice of bread, buttered side up, to complete the sandwich. Repeat this process for the second sandwich.
  13. Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Allow it to warm up for a couple of minutes.
  14. Once the skillet is hot, carefully place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet, buttered side down.

  18. Once both sides of the sandwiches are golden brown and the cheese is melted, remove them from the skillet and place them on a cutting board.
  19. Allow the sandwiches to cool for a minute before slicing them in half diagonally. This will make them easier to handle and eat.
  20. Serve the tuna melt sandwiches warm, accompanied by your choice of sides such as potato chips, a side salad, or pickles.
